This cat is so cute she could inspire world peace and universal health care.

Shadow pretends he is not a kitten, but he is and very adorable. He is even dignified when he does this.

Drugstore Flowers 2009

Every year the local drugstore does this massive garden display. It's very uplifting and a sure sign of spring in this almost seasonless place.

Here is Mei-mei at 8 months old and doing very well. She is very active and gives Shadow a run for his money.
Note: In the "computer" pictures, I did NOT set them up that way! I came in and found Shadow staring at my screen. Everything you see there is completely spontaneous.

TINY KITTEN
Driving to Corona on the night of August 10, we pulled into a gas station and the universe dropped a TINYKITN on us.
Two months old, scrappy as hell, devouring half a pizza someone had thrown out and run over. Which is probably what would have happened to her if we hadn't done what we did.
The convenience store didn't have any cat food, so we got her a tuna sandwich, and found another convenience store across the highway that did have cat food and one of those cardboard french fry tray things. Basically we fed her into a stupor. She crawled under the oleander bushes decorating the gas station, and I spent the next couple of hours making friends. She's all bones. She snuggled in my hand, but didn't want to get into the carton A. got from the gas station guy. But we did get her in there at last, and drove home with her safely in the carton. We took her into the back bathroom, which already had a litter box, and shut her in there with plenty of food and towels to sleep on. She must have felt abducted by aliens. No noise, no cars, nothing to run away from.
These pictures are from her first visit to the Small Animal Hospital a few hours later. She was deemed to be two months old, healthy except for a slight cold and fleas.
Andy wants to call her Rorshach, but the rest of us are voting for Mei-mei (Little Sister in Mandarin).

UCR Campus Trees - In Memoriam
This little green park-like area on campus was a favorite resting/ lunch spot as well as just plain beautiful. These were oak trees that had been planted in honor of H. Dean Boen, "for outstanding service as Physical Plant Administrator, Riverside Campus, 1974-1978." They were cut down to make room for "progress" -- an ugly new building and brick walls cutting out the sunlight, concrete everywhere. The view from the commons building now looks like shit. They are planning to do the same thing with the Health Center. Here, taken by Amorpha^Julian, are the Boen Oak Trees a few weeks before their death.

There really were a lot of snails.
We found this creature underneath the cover to the water pipe access in our "front yard". We thought it was a snake; it turned out to be a lizard. It had been eating our snails under there. Later, someone told us they captured it and were going to take it to the Extension to be put in a proper habitat.
The snails were brought in a bit earlier, because we were going to wash out a catbox using soap and water and didn't want to kill any of our gastropodan friends.
