We spent our Sept. 11 mostly staying away from the overdone tributes on teedee (although we did see some of CNN before checking out) and doing nice, lovely, peaceful things. We had a nice conversation with an Armenian guy in a coffee bar, and we went to a halal grocery and gave them about $10 worth of business (mostly spices, sauces and incense).

San Francisco Excursion
|

Once in San Mateo, we drove to Millbrae. We took the Bart from Millbrae to San Francisco and took the streetcar from Powell Street into Chinatown, where we had a very intriguing dinner at the Utopia Restaurant. Cold, windy and delightful. Especially if you're Chris Akanora.

Every once in a while, we have to drive out to Mill Creek just to get away from town and to cool off.

Another wonderful discovery on one of our long drives. Many times we don't go out deliberately looking for abandoned buildings, but always have the camera along just in case. Taken by us and various amorpha.

Ann Rushout just oozed in one day...
|
|
|
About a week ago, a beautiful snail came into the entryway. jason immediately adopted her, put her in a bowl with lettuce and cucumbers, covered it with a colander and named her Ann Rushout after the snail in Rumer Godden's Impunity Jane. We got her a habitat which we are fixing up. She is a common garden snail. She adores cucumbers. She's crawling on my leg while I type this. If you want to keep a pet snail go to http://www.petsnails.co.uk/.

We had to. We just had to go, because we'd never been to one, and we couldn't go through the rest of our lives without having seen it once. Also, by the time the final book comes out, we may be in Outer Mongolia, or at least Vancouver BC.
Andy is still convinced that it is Snape who dies, mostly because he finds Snape the only likable character in the entire bloody damned series. We usually don't read them until there are paperback editions in the library, because we won't stoop to buying them.

The Pulgas Water Temple

We'd been told by various friends for years just how special this place was. From the little we were able to see of it, it is indeed. However, we were there for only about fifteen minutes. Against all precedent, it is now gated, and is open for only a few daylight hours. No more going there and meditating at night, as zillions of people have been doing since the thing was founded.
We arrived at five minutes before closing, but the gatekeeper was kind enough to allow us in just to snap a few pictures.
